Deborah Smith Projects | Contemporary Arts Organisation

About

I’ve been curating projects since 1995, working as a consultant and commissioning projects throughout the UK. You’ll get a sense of the scope of my work shown on this site.

Throughout this time, I’ve had the pleasure of working with artists, writers, architects, organisations and specialists, in an organisational context and as an external consultant.

My exhibition highlights include:

  • Curating the first UK touring exhibition of African-American artist Kerry James Marshall.
  • Commissioning eleven artists to make new work in response to local history collections/archives for Navigating History.
  • Being awarded a Stanley Picker Fellowship, Kingston University, for the exhibition and publication In the space of elsewhere.
  • Working with Jai Redman/Ultimate Holding Company and Dodolab on Thetford Art Projects.

My other career highlights include acting as:

  • Head of Programmes, working strategically with the Contemporary Art Society, building on my earlier contribution as an external consultant.
  • Exhibitions Curator at The Hayward, London, for which I conceptualised and initiated the Hayward Touring: Curatorial Open 2009-2011 programme and co curated number of touring exhibitions including The end of the line: attitudes in drawing.
  • Associate Curator for the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, embedding contemporary art into the festival programme.
  • Founding partner of the curatorial practice smith + fowle, based in the East End of London, delivering projects with museums and galleries across the country.

Most recently, in 2011 I established Deborah Smith Projects, a not-for-profit organisation to support the delivery of exciting new projects…
